How Far Does Water Damage Travel?
Water Damage Can Travel Farther Than You Think.
A water leak doesn't only damage the area where you see the water. Depending on the materials involved, moisture can travel several feet away from the original leak, creating hidden water damage in areas that may look and feel completely dry.
Building materials such as drywall, insulation, wood framing, subflooring, cabinets, and flooring can absorb and move moisture through capillary action. Water can also follow framing, seams, penetrations, and gravity into adjoining rooms or lower levels. A small plumbing leak in one room may result in elevated moisture inside a wall, underneath flooring, or in materials well beyond the visible damage.
That's why professional water damage inspections don't stop at the obvious wet area. Moisture meters and thermal imaging help our technicians investigate how far water traveled and determine which materials require structural drying or water damage restoration. Finding hidden moisture early can help prevent additional material damage, odors, and potential mold growth.
